Dry Needling

So, What Exactly Is It?
"Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. [It] is a technique used to treat dysfunctions in skeletal muscle, fascia, and connective tissue, and to diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input, and reduce or restore impairments in body structure and function, leading to improved activity and participation."APTA

Trigger points can occur from a build-up of toxic chemicals that the body is unable to remove following tissue trauma, muscle dysfunction, physical activities, tension, or an injury.

Dry needling techniques are strategically utilized to target these trigger points and release them. The release restarts an inflammatory process in the body in order to flush out negative chemicals and restore homeostasis. To learn more about dry needling and how it stimulates the body to promote healing, read more here.

This can help resolve pain and muscle tension, and will promote healing.

Trigger Point Dry Needling (TrP DN) is a valuable and effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain. Certified physical therapists complete extensive training to incorporate needling with their knowledge of human anatomy and manual treatment techniques.

Dry needling is NOT acupuncture, yet can be performed in conjunction with acupuncture interventions to promote total body wellness.

Dry needling can be used for chronic pain, acute injuries, exercise recovery, sports performance, stress management, sleeping assistance, and general health and well-being.
Prior to all dry needling sessions, your Doctor of Physical Therapy will provide education regarding dry needling, answer any questions/concerns, thoroughly assess the body region to be needled, and finish with soft tissue massage to all muscles needled.
